PR11008 fib symposium, Stockholm, June 2012 The 2012 fib Symposium will be held from 10 to 14 June in Stockholm, Sweden. The symposium is organized around the theme, 'Concrete structures for a sustainable community', which is particularly relevant to today's global concerns. Concrete can play an important role in sustainability, as it is the most frequently used man-made construction material, and concrete structures can potentially achieve very long life spans. Building concrete structures with minimal environmental footprints is essential, but it is even more important to use and develop the many beneficial properties of concrete in order to realize its full potential during service life. Despite the already existing advantages of concrete, the concrete sector needs to make improvements in order to minimize its environmental footprint and further develop its sustainability. The 2012 Symposium will provide an excellent forum for engineers, researchers, designer and administrators to meet and to discuss these important issues. Some 170 papers will be presented orally and published in the symposium proceedings. The papers will cover the following topics: - alternative binders; - carbonation and carbon dioxide uptake; - case studies; - designing concrete structures for durability and sustainability; - durability; - LCC, LCA, and classification systems; - recycling; - repair, renovation, and upgrading for improved sustainability; - sustainable concrete materials; - sustainable concrete pavements; - sustainable concrete production. There will not be any poster sessions, but papers describing ongoing projects, preliminary results and minor studies will be presented in special, shorter sessions. The Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm will be the venue for the Symposium. Founded in 1827, KTH is Sweden's first polytechnic and accounts for one-third of Sweden's technical research and engineering education capacity at the university level. Stockholm, capital of Sweden, is scenically located at the border between the lake Malaren and the Baltic Sea. Among its numerous attractions, some of the most renowned are the Wasa ship museum, the outdoor Skansen museum , the City Hall, and the Royal Castle. Registration will open in late December 2011.
