PR05003 International competition: the fib Awards for Outstanding Structures fib, the International Federation for Structural Concrete ("fˇdˇration internationale du bˇton"), has announced the opening of the second edition of its Awards for Outstanding Structures ("AOS") Competition. The promotion of concrete as a medium for the creation of both functional and aesthetically pleasing structures is one of fib's main missions. The AOS, which continue a tradition established by one of fib's parent organisations, FIP (Fˇdˇration Internationale de la Prˇcontrainte), give international recognition to the innovative and inspiring use of concrete in construction. The Awards are attributed in two categories: Civil Engineering Structures (including bridges) and Buildings. Two or three Awards and two or three Special Mention citations will be attributed, depending on the number of entries received. The jury is composed of about a dozen international experts in the field of structural concrete. In selecting the winning and notable structures, the jury will take into account criteria such as: * design aspects including aesthetics and design detailing; * construction practice and quality of work; * environmental aspects of the design and its construction; * durability and weathering potential; * significance of the entry's contribution to the development and improvement of concrete construction. The winners will receive their award, a bronze plaque to be displayed on the structure, at next year's fib Congress, which will take place in Naples, Italy, from 5 to 8 June 2006. The deadline for the submission of the entry form and associated documentation is 22 October 2005. The application procedure and entry form are available on fib's website at http://www.fib-international.org/about/awards/. Applicants must be supported by the fib Head of Delegation or National Member Group secretary for their country in order to confirm the authenticity of the indicated authors. Potential applicants who do not know the fib delegate or secretary for their country can contact the fib secretariat (fib@epfl.ch) for this information. A brochure presenting the winners and special mentions from the 2002 edition is available on request from the fib secretariat. ### Note: On request, the text of this press release can be provided in French or German
