PR06006 fib Bulletin 37: Precast concrete railway track systems The latest fib Bulletin, number 37, "Precast concrete railway track systems", is now available for purchase from the fib secretariat. This publication is a revision of the 1987 state-of-art report "Concrete Railway Sleepers", issued by the former FIP Commission on Prefabrication. During the two decades since that report, the use of precast concrete for plain track, switches and crossings, tunnels and other applications in the field of railway track systems has increased significantly. This is mainly due to developments in production methods for concrete sleepers in switch and crossing layouts and in the installation, renewal and maintenance of concrete sleepered track. The use of slab track for high-speed track has also grown, particularly where new track is built or existing track is renewed and long periods of track possession are possible. Given the advancements in precast concrete railway track systems since the publication of the 1987 report, from design through manufacture to installation and maintenance, an update was considered timely in order to provide a synthesis of currently available information. This new edition covers quality, design, production, durability, maintenance and environmental considerations, and includes a survey on the use of precast concrete track systems in over 30 countries. A review copy of this Bulletin can be provided on request.
