Background: fib was created in 1998 by the merger of two organsations, CEB (Comitˇ Euro-International du Bˇton/Euro-International Concrete Committee, founded in 1953) and FIP (Fˇdˇration Internationale de la Prˇcontrainte/International Federation for Prestressing, founded in 1952). Membership: fib has approximately 1000 members from 39 countries, including 37 National Member Groups and about 900 individual or corporate members. Structure: The technical work of fib is carried out by 10 Commissions and three Special Activity Groups (SAG), resulting in the publication of Bulletins (see below). The Commissions are generally composed of several Task Groups (TG) that focus on specific topics within the Commission's area of expertise. fib is governed by the General Assembly (GA) - consisting of delegates from the National Member Groups, the President and Presidium, and a Council consisting of the Heads of Delegations, the President, the Deputy-President, the immediate Past-President, Honorary Presidents and the Secretary General. fib's Steering Committee (SC), which initiates and guides the activities of the Commissions and Task Groups and monitors their output, consists of 10 elected members plus the Commission chairmen. Activities: Conferences: One or two international symposia per year, on specific themes relating to concrete construction, are organised by fib member groups, and once every four years an international congress is held on all aspects of structural concrete. Courses: Short courses, seminars and workshops on advanced topics are organised at least once per year. They are led by experts from fib and are targeted to smaller, more local and more specialized audiences than the symposia. A calendar of upcoming events and information on obtaining proceedings from previous symposia and congresses are given on fib's website, www.fib-international.org/events/. Bulletins: These technical publications, which include state-of-art reports, guidance documents and recommendations, disseminate the results of fib's Commissions, SAGs and Task Groups. They are published four to six times per year. Journal: "Structural Concrete, Journal of the fib", is a quarterly learned journal, offering high-quality refereed papers from and for the profession at large. The Journal includes the federation's newsletter "fib-news". Awards: fib promotes the recognition of significant contributions to the field of structural concrete by attributing a certain number of awards and honours. These include medals awarded yearly as recognition of individual lifetime achievements, bi-annual "diplomas" and monetary awards to promising young engineers, and bronze plaques attributed every four years at the fib congress to outstanding concrete structures.
