Fifth CFUP Study Day – Ultra-High-Performance Fibre-Reinforced Concrete in Practice

The fib supports the Fifth CFUP Study Day – Ultra-High-Performance Fibre-Reinforced Concrete in Practice, which will take place on 23 October 2025 in Fribourg (Switzerland).

On 23 October 2025, the Haute école d’ingénierie et d’architecture de Fribourg (HEIA-FR) will host the Fifth Study Day on Ultra-High-Performance Fibre-Reinforced Concrete (UHPC/CFUP). This event brings together leading researchers, engineers, and practitioners to discuss how this innovative material is shaping the future of construction.

Ultra-high-performance fibre-reinforced concrete (UHPC/CFUP) has been used in Switzerland for over two decades. With more than 500 projects completed, it has proven to offer outstanding durability, strength, and efficiency in both structural engineering and architectural applications.

This fifth edition of the study day focuses on projects realized between 2023 and 2025. The programme highlights not only technical achievements but also emphasizes quality assurance during design and execution as well as the sustainability evaluation of UHPC/CFUP projects.

The event features a series of presentations and thematic sessions:

  • Upcycling of Civil Engineering Structures – including the restoration of historic bridges and viaducts with UHPC/CFUP solutions.
  • New Pedestrian Bridges – showcasing innovative monolithic, mixed-material, and lightweight structures.
  • Thematic Parallel Sessions – focusing on mechanical characterization and quality assurance, as well as sustainability assessment.
  • Upcycling of Building Structures – strengthening historical slabs, steel masts, and commercial floors with hybrid UHPC systems.
  • New Bridges – from highway overpasses to railway and station bridges, demonstrating the material’s versatility in modern infrastructure.

The day will conclude with a wrap-up by Prof. Eugen Brühwiler (EPFL, BridgIng Consultant), followed by an aperitif for informal networking.

Speakers include experts from Swiss institutions (EPFL, HEIA-FR, BFH, EMPA, Lucerne University of Applied Sciences, engineering firms) as well as international contributions from Germany, Luxembourg, and beyond. This wide participation underscores the growing relevance of UHPC/CFUP in Europe’s construction landscape.
