CEB Bulletin No. 238

Title: New Approach to Durability Design - An example for carbonation induced corrosion
No.: 238
Year: 1997
Pages: 152
ISBN: 978-2-88394-037-6
Abstract: This report was drafted by the Task Groups 5.1 ‘Modelling of material behaviour exposed to environment’ and 5.2 ‘Environmental actions’ of CEB Commission 5 ‘Operation and Use’. For carbonation induced reinforcement corrosion, the best understood deterioration mechanism, it is demonstrated how real performance based durability design on a probabilistic basis may appear. Examples are given for a simple test structure: Background of Service Life Design (Traditional design, structural design procedure, durability limit states, durability of existing structures); Definition of Modelling and Design Levels (Levels of modelling to be treated, elements of design for durability procedures); Presentation of the Test Case (Degradation mechanism and design procedures, exemplification of the durability limit state, test case balcony element, definition of different design levels); Service Life Design for New Structures (Design approaches, macro-level design based on the CEB-FIP Model Code 1990, meso-level design, micro-level design); Assessment of Existing Structures (Basic approach, macro-, meso-, and micro-level); Appendix 1: Terms and Definitions; Appendix 2: The CTH Carbonation Model - A Micro-level Model for Carbonation in a Natural Climate (micro-climate, temperature and moisture conditions, carbonation, references)
