The development of reinforced and prestressed concrete was widely promoted over a period of 50 years by the Comité euro-international du béton (CEB) and the Fédération internationale de la précontrainte (FIP). In 1998 the two associations merged to form the Fédération internationale du béton (fib).

The CEB and FIP produced various publications, such as CEB Bulletins d'information, FIP–Reports, FIP–Notes and CEB–News. These Bulletins or reports included state-of-the-art reports, research reports, application manuals, guides to good practice and the CEB/FIP Model Codes 1978 and 1990. These model codes provided design principles and application rules to the structural engineering profession and have been predominantly used for code drafting by many national and international standardizing bodies.

The Textbook on Structural Concrete provides background information to and explanations of the work covered by CEB/FIP Model Code 90 (MC 90). Its target audience is advanced students: basic knowledge of the structural analysis and behaviour of structural concrete is necessary for a full understanding. Practising structural engineers may also consult it to gain background information on MC 90 (and national or regional codes, e.g. EUROCODE 2, which is based on MC 90). The Textbook will also help teachers at technical universities or engineering schools to achieve a better understanding of the recent theories on structural concrete.

The authors invited to draft the different chapters were mostly all involved in drafting MC 90. In this way consistent information was provided both in the code and the textbook.

The textbook was first presented to fib members during the Technical Activity Workshop in October 1999 in Prague, held at the first fib symposium.
